My inestimable friend / Alastair R. Brown.
"In 1779 when William Brown was a fourteen-year-old midshipman on the Frigate Apollo, a French sharp-shooter's musket ball passed through the brim of his hat but injured only his left hand. Many years later, on the deck of HMS Victory, Admiral Lord Nelson would not be so fortunate when a French sharp shooter identified him. One day Alastair Brown was shown a copy of Sherwin's etching, The Death of Lord Robert Manners after the Battle of the Saints by his cousin, who was able to identify William Brown as the midshipman kneeling at the foot of the bed. This chance encounter greatly increased the author's interest in his ancestor's naval career. William remained a midshipman for the five years of peace following the battle until his pursuit of a commission led him to join William Bligh on the Bounty. Perhaps fortunately, he was transferred to another ship by the First Lord of the Admiralty, shortly before the Bounty sailed. In 1805, now commanding the 74-gun Ajax, William received a request from Nelson that Ajax accompany Victory to join the blockade of Cadiz. However, when Nelson later asked him to accompany Admiral Calder back to England for Calder's court martial, William unfortunately missed the Battle of Trafalgar by a few days. William Brown then attended Nelson's funeral before being sent to Malta as the first commissioner for the Royal Navy there. He was Commander-in-Chief at Jamaica when he died there of yellow fever in 1814. Not just a detailed account of the life of an admiral who served at the time of Nelson, the book contains many fascinating insights into life in the Georgian navy and Georgian society at large."--From inside front cover.

England's mistress : the infamous life
of
Emma Hamilton /Kate Williams.
This is a comprehensive biography of Emma Hamilton, Lord Nelson's mistress. It covers her entire life from her birth in 1765 to her death in Calais in 1815, when she was survived by her daughter, Horatia. As a young girl Emma came to London to make her fortune and eventually married Sir William Hamilton, the British Envoy to Naples in 1791. She became a close friend of the Queen of Naples and then Lord Nelson's mistress. The book draws on many letters which were previously undiscovered. There are reproductions of the famous Romney portraits of Emma as well as illustrations by Gilray and Rowlandson lampooning Emma and her relationship with Nelson. There are extensive notes, a bibliography and an index.

Better conceiv'd than describ'd : the life and times
of
Captain James King (1750-84), Captain Cook's
Better Conceiv'd than Describ'd is the first full biography of James King - the interesting, though tragically short-lived, Royal Navy Officer in the reign of George III. Captain James King's adventurous life saw him lay claim to Alaska in the name of George III, fight as a frigate captain in the American War of Independence and test the marine chronometer that revolutionised navigation. Starting in the small town of Clitheroe (in Lancashire), and taking us to the edges of the then known world on a great voyage of discovery, this book shows the development of James King not only as a sailor but also as an astronomer sponsored by the Board of Longitude, while also examining the death of Captain Cook at the hands of the Hawaiians. With cameo appearances from Horatio Nelson, the infamous William Bligh, society artist Sir Joshua Reynolds, diarist Fanny Burney and statesman Edmund Burke, this is a 'who's who' of Georgian society and shows the importance of patronage in the second half of the 18th century.

Victory : from fighting the Armada to Trafalgar and beyond /Iain Ballantyne & Jonathan Eastland.
There is no more illustrious warship name in British naval history than HMS Victory, which is inextricably linked with Admiral Lord Nelson and the Battle of Trafalgar. In 1805 the most famous Victory was the scene of Nelson's greatest triumph and also his death. She is today preserved at Portsmouth as the oldest commissioned warship in the world. Less well known is that six previous warships also carried the name. The first Victory was Sir John Hawkins' flagship during the Battle of the Armada in 1588 while the loss of the sixth in 1744 was considered a national tragedy. All manner of maritime life is included in this book, from piracy in the Azores to gentlemanly encounters between fleets and the battle of annihilation that was Trafalgar. The full horror, majesty and thunder of naval strategy and warfare in the age of fighting sail are all revealed via first-hand accounts of the action and key events. The post-Trafalgar career of Victory is also studied, including her part in destroying Napoleon's hopes of conquering Russia. We also learn how HMS Victory was saved for the British nation and the world.
